In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York, was kidnapped and sold as a slave.
I attended the premiere in 12 years a slave in Toronto Film Festival. Without a ticket, we had to wait for close to 4 hours, hoping that we may have to say that it's definitely worth the wait and the hands on the best movie ive ever seen at the festival. The film is based on the true story of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man living in New York who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana. As the film begins, we are exposed to his talent as a musician (violin) and get a glimpse of the life he leads with his wife and two children. Everything is fine until he met two men who seem taken from his music and wanted to bring it with them so that he can play at different events. When Solomon wakes up in chains, his dark journey begins and the film never allows break. If Youve seen McQueens other works then more or less know what movie to wait (if you havent, please stop reading and watch Hunger and shame). 12 years Slave is dark and rough, it shows everything without him sugarcoating. It is certainly difficult to see, a few people came out of the theater, but in my opinion, it is not only worth watching, but necessary. Films explores themes of bondage are few and far between, and have never been as comprehensive and effective as this. Beautifully shot and edited, the film has moments of tension, sadness and a few laughs here and there. Steve McQueen created more masterpiece. Most players get very little screen time. Paul Giamatti and Sarah Paulson saw for a few minutes, but both are great as usual. Benedict Kambarbach play planter that recognizes talent Solomon and try to help him somewhat. Despite being a slave trader, he is represented in the film as a good person. Kambarbach was very good, but far outshined by Michael Fassbender. He goes through every emotion and give everything. In my opinion, this is his best performance to date. Paul Dano gets a few minutes of screen time as well, but it makes amazing use of it. As Benedicts worker, he despises slaves and songs sung by Solomon makes an incredibly powerful scene, one of the most important in the film. Lupita Nyongos first appearance in the film is impressive, as it plays a heartbroken young slave. I hope to have a long career ahead of her, she certainly has a talent for it. The real star is definitely Chiwetel Ejiofor. His performance as Solomon is an impressive and unforgettable, I really hope he wins the Oscar this year. All After all, if you get a chance to see the 12-year-old slave, do not miss it. Not everyone can stomach it, but its excellent film that deserves to be seen.
